Movie Review: Blue Valentine

This was one heck of a movie... extremely sad... realistic... and I was glued to the screen every second. The acting was fantastic. To be honest I hope this wins something come acadamy award time. Basically its about a deteriorating marriage between two young people who fa

ll deeply in love but the day to day reality of life tears them apart. I recommend this movie but its terribly sad so bring kleenex!

Valentines Day 2011

The day started out nicely... the weather here has warmed up to 56 degrees... and I was outside sweeping the front walkway.. no jacket! Felt so good to have sun on my arms. My dogs are laying outside in their dog pen with the sun shining on them... they also are enjoying this bit of warmth. The weatherman predicts more snow next week :( Bad weatherman! Sunday evening I baked some yummy strawberry cupcakes for Monday. I'll attach a photo. Besides the weather and cupcakes my hubby brought me flowers and DOVE chocolates... bad hubby! I love Dove chocolates. A big sin to me! We watched the last three episodes of Big Love... Season 4. Since I don't get HBO I have to wait a long while for the next season to be released on disc. Today I may go to see Blue Valentine. I love both actors in it and hope its as good as the previews make it look. I'll review it in the next couple of day. Take care peeps!

Its been a while. Sorry for that. I'll try to post more often... there are still a few around who do check my blog out. It got discouraging to me that I received so few comments. So... lets give this another try!

Winter here in Santa Fe NM has been harsh. Below digit temps... a few snow storms. Frozen ice on the INSIDE of our windows. So I have been basically inside knitting, sewing, and reading... and of course watching a few shows on the tube... some of my favorites lately are Two and a Half Men, How I Met Your Mother, Face Off, Supernatural, and Survivor starts next week.. sometime in March the new Breaking Bad season will start (I can't hardly wait!) and in April will start the new season for Haven... I don't watch TV nonstop... but do catch these shows when I can.

Thank God for Netflix! Nonstop awesome films. I watched Red Road... a British film... and it was great!

My latest work in stain glass

Two years ago I cut out the peices of glass that would eventually be a map of New Mexico... with all of its counties worked in different colors and types of glass. After I finished that step I started to think it would be very difficult to get the peices to have sharp corners as I didn't have a glass saw.. only a grinder. Last month I was poking around all of my 'stuff' and found this bag filled with these county peices unfinished. I then thought that this would be a great challange for me... to be able to produce this art without a saw. It worked. The corners are slightly rounded but still appear to be correct county shapes and the colors and glass look spectacular shining in a window. I also copper wrapped several crystals, hammered some copper sheeting to add to the finished work. I then hung the map on a peice of dried cholla cactus. All were elements of New Mexico. I had to hang it on a wall as it was just too bright to photograph in a window... but this can give you an idea of how nice it turned out. This was a gift for a friend.

Wow. I really enjoyed this book. The lives of the many characters felt real to me. So engrossing. The way the chapters are written - very easy to read a section and stop - and pick up again. I love the LA history... I had to sometimes stop and say that this is an AMAZING book. I highly recommend it. I must add... when it was first published it received a lot of negative reviews. James Frey... the author... made many enemies with his first book "A Million Little Peices" which he claimed was truth but in reality it was PARTIALLY fiction. A lot of people didn't like this including Oprah. But the book itself was also a great read. So... go to your library and check this one out. Well worth it.

Guardian angels

This is Sarah... my personal guardian angel. Three months ago she rented our little efficiency apartment and since then has become a friend. She has started me on a walking program and makes sure I don't lag behind her. When we shop for groceries she watches what I am buying and helps me keep away from the bad chemical sodium stuff. Sarah is fairly informed about nutrition so I do listen to her. Its still not easy though. I do love my ice cream!!! She recently lost both her parents to cancer. I think myself and my husband are now her adopted parents. She has really lightened up my life and is a very special person.

Magic Weight Loss Wands!

I've spent most of the past week working on these wands. I'll be doing a program at my TOPs meeting and the theme will be exercise. A good blogging friend of mine sent me a Magic Weight Loss wand a couple of years ago and I loved it so much that I decided it would be fun to hand out a wand to all of my TOPs friends. In case you can't read it the tag says :Magic Weight Loss Wand. Wave in the air three times and then walk around the block twice" By the way... it works. I've been on a walking program for a couple of weeks now and feel so much better and stronger. It is said that it takes two weeks to develop a habit. I hope I now have developed this habit! I crocheted a lace Christmas treetop star for my mother four years ago. I loved it and have wanted to make one for myself. Well... after procrastinating for four years I finally sat myself down and made myself one... it took about a week... and then stiffened it in sugar water, covered a plastic tube with green velvet, and hot-glued the tube holder onto the back. Its finished! I love it. Can't wait to see it on my tree in less than 6 months. Please reply if you are interested in obtaining the information concerning this pattern.

Review of "The Shack"

I just finished reading "The Shack"... and this book was so poorly written. The author's lack of writing skill, the syrupy words, but I read on. And it only gets worse from there. The author's need to dress almost every phrase with metaphors made reading this book laughable. Please don't take offence if you read this book and you loved it. I'm not attacking you. I'm simply giving my opinion. If it changed your life for the better, good for you. I truly am happy that it did. The world needs more people who look at the bigger picture and do their damnedest to love one another. There's too much hate and anger simmering in the general populous. Just don't attack me because I didn't like it. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it!

I designed and x-stitched a Christmas stocking for my golf-fanatic brother-in-law Spencer. I like how it turned out. There isn't much I could do to make a golf-themed stocking... so ended up with a large green grass area. I still like it and hope he does too! Enjoy Spencer!

Here is a little baby cap I knitted recently. It's knitted from Knit Picks Wool of the Andes yarn. I love this yarn as its soft and squishy and not a bit itchy (that rhymes!). Summer is almost here but its hard to believe considering how odd this spring weather has been in the Southwest... one day warm and next day chilly and windy. I don't really care much for wind and it play havoc with my allergies. I sneeze a lot! I apologize for not posting much lately but intend to try my best to keep my peeps caught up with my life more often. There are several projects in the half-way completed stage... once they are worth posting I'll do so... Have a great rest of this month. By the way... I LOVE COMMENTS! Thanks!

Its been a while since I posted. I spent a few weeks in California helping to nurse my mother. She suffered a broken ankle in a fall and needed help. Since then she has fully recovered and is her spry self again. I then spent a week in Orlando Florida with my VBF Diane. It was wonderful. A goal of mine was to someday visit Epcot Center and that came true. So much fun. So today is Mothers Day. I want to wish my wonderful mother a happy one. She is a mom to 6 children, a grandmother to 13 and a great-grantmother to 21! We all adore her. I love you mommy. This is a photo of her taken when she was 14. She was and is a great beauty.

March dishcloth from Krisknits

Whew! I finally finished the March dishcloth FAP. This was a mystery pattern so didn't know what it was until most of the way through it. This was fun to do but I was pretty tired of it by the end. I doubled the yarn in order to make it thick and started to run out towards the finish... therefore the top border is only 2 rows instead of four. The yarn is called "I love this yarn" and I think I got it at Hobby Lobby. The colors in the photo are pretty bad... don't know about this camera of mine. But I hope you can see the pattern. Its an easter basket with a bunny and eggs... very cute! I am now looking forward to her April dishcloth. These mystery follow-along patterns are a lot of fun.

My hubby and I have been waiting forever (it seems like) for the third season of Breaking Bad. It starts this Sunday. I can't wait!

Also... I had a nasty fall two weeks ago and broke my little finger so have been typing with ine hand... very slow. A week later my mother fell and broke her ankle! I have now been in S. California helping her get around. I love my mother and am glad to be able to be of some support. In the mean time I've been knitting up a storm. Once I am back home I will be posting some photos of finished projects. In the meantime I feel Spring is around the corner!!! Yippee!

Movie Review: Alice in Wonderland

I loved it. The visuals are fantastic. But... and there is a but... the story itself is not a strong one. I'm not sure what it is I was looking for... maybe not such a typical conclusion? The characters were brilliant... especially... of course... my pretend boyfriend Johnny Depp. Helen Bonham Carter was a riot as the red queen. I saw the 3-D version and at first found it a bit distracting... but by the end I appreciated it... especially the butterfly at the conclusion.

I broke my little finger last week and this is being typed with one hand... very awkwardly! So I will make this short... do go see this... it is a lot of fun.

King cake for Mardi Gras

I've never been to Mardi Gras but from what I have heard and read its one big party. I would have loved it 30 years ago but I'm not so sure now. But... to celebrate I've made a traditional Mardi Gras king cake. It turned out pretty well... not as beautiful as some of the photos I've seen but its tasty and was loads of fun to make! So.. heres to Mardi Gras!!!

I do... I loved Betsy McCall and collected all of her pages until I was around 11. I wish I still had them and it made me wonder what ever happened to them? I was 4 years old when this page was printed. It was the first Betsy McCall page that McCalls magazine published. That would be 1951!

My goals for the week are: exercise 30 minutes every day, attend my TOPS meeting on Thursday, make a King Cake to celebrate Mardi Gras and take to my former work place to share with former co-workers, finish the golf Christmas stocking I am making for my brother-in-law, housework, and walk my dogs. Oh... I am also planning on seeing Wolfman tomorrow! I'll post a review but I've heard its a good movie!

The first four postings of the pattern for this dishcloth I had no idea what the picture would be. By the fifth posting I was pretty sure it was a snowman... and I was correct. This cute cloth was a knit-along posted by KrisKnits on her blog. She creates amazing patterns for dishcloths which include all of the holidays and seasons. There is also a wedding set and a new baby set. This was fun to do and I am anxiously awaiting her clues for the February knit-along. I'll wager its a heart!

Snowbound and sick

Its been snowing a lot here in Santa Fe... so much that it makes me just want to stay in and knit. I've also come down with a slight cold and I'm drinking tons of green tea and staying warm and hydrated hoping it doesn't turn into anything worse. So... being bored I went through my patterns and came across this panda puppet. I'm still fairly new at knitting so I read the pattern and determined that I may be able to do it without a whole lot of frogging. And this is the result! It was so easy since I have learned new stitch techniques. The most difficult part of the project was lining it without a pattern. I love doing projects when I already have all of the 'ingredients' at hand and no running to Michaels to pick up anything! I consider this a cost free project. Cute isn't she/he?

Movie Review: The Hurt Locker

This is a movie worth watching. It opened up my eyes as to the horrible conditions our soldiers face in Iraq. Its a tense edge-of-your-seat movie. If you are curious as to how things are over there rent this film. 4-stars from me.

Anya's Sweater

I love how this little sweater turned out. Even tho there are many many little mistakes... after a while... I figured that if I kept frogging back with every little error this would have NEVER been finished. So I put on imaginary blinders and just forged ahead... missed a stitch? add on... too many stitches? knit together next 2 stitches... and so on. Its cute anyway... and its for a special blogger friend's baby... Anya. Her mother, Rima, is an excellent knitter so I am a little embaressed for her to see it... but all in all it should look cute on Anya. (If your reading this Rima... here it is!!! After so long! I think it will fit Anya in the spring. Its on its way to you now. I hope you like it.)

Movie Review: Riding in Cars with Boys

Drew Barrymore plays Beverly, a 1960s teenager in a working town whose unplanned pregnancy at the age of 15 becomes the thing that defines her tough life. She quits school, marries her baby's dropout father, Ray (Steve Zahn), and spends the next 20 years regretting her messed-up plans. Her husband becomes a drug addict, and she kicks him out. Her son, Jason is a normal, attention- demanding little kid whose deepest wish is for his mommy to be happy. The story shuttles between 1986, when Bev is riding in a car with her now-grown boy, Jason, and all the years and miles leading up to that road trip. I found this movie to be fairly accurate portrayal of the difficulties of a young marriage between two immature kids. This movie is basically about kids having a kid. I started out thinking this would be a light-hearted comedy… but it quickly became serious. I did like this movie a lot and its definitely worth renting. Check out Netflix or Blockbuster!

Lemons... in the WINTER!

A friend of mine just mailed me four of the most beautiful lemons. She lives in Arizona and actually picked these from her tree last week! Since I live at high desert altitude and everything around me is brown and dry from winter.. not to mention bitter cold... this was a thrill to receive. I'm now tempted to relocate to Arizona! Thanks so much Cynthia! I'm enjoy these... I see lemon bread and lemon meringe pie in my future!

Second cabled scarf done

This one was tough to do... not only was the color pretty bland but I had just finished this same pattern last month... so doing it again was definately a sleeper for me... every time I picked up the needles my eyes instantly got heavy! But even though it was a bit of a struggle to finish I am happy with it... very pretty color...and it shows off the cabling well. I think I'll file this pattern away for a while!

Movie Review: Avatar

Amazing effects? Yes. Amazing script? Not really. An enjoyable film, but for me it didn't leave a huge impact. If you're into sci-fi you will most probably be knocked out by this film. For me it felt as if I had seen the story before... the story line felt like Dances with Wolves... man meets woman of another culture... has to be accepted by her tribe... and ends up battling his own people to defend his adopted clan. Sound familiar? But I will give credit where its due... the effects were outstanding... and the battle scenes were exciting. I think the media hype is way over done... and the price of admission is also outlandish. My suggestion is that if you haven't seen it yet do go and see it... but wait a couple of months when the price of admission goes down and the crowds thin out.

I finished this scarf and delayed posting it as it was a Christmas gift for my BFF Diane. Now that she has it I can show it off... I was pretty happy with the results. Self patterning scarf almost done

This has been a fun knit. Its a self-patterning yarn... and I love the colors. I did a seed stitch along the edges and a simple knit/pearl for the body. I did the seed stitch to keep it from curling but it didn't seem to work. Blocking this may prove to be difficult as its a cotton/acrylic blend... and may not stop curling. But I love it anyway.

I joined Susan Anderson's Christmas knit along last week... this was a fun project but showed me how much I still need to learn! His tiny elf shoes were a challange... the first one looks horrible... but the second one turned out much better. I still think... even tho there are a lot of flaws... he's adorable. The photo he's propped up against is one of myself (when I was 5) and my mother... taken in 1952! Yup... the olden days! ;)

Well.. here are the stain glass ornaments that were disassembled in the previous post. They are complete and ready to thread with a gold cord. Some are gifts and the smaller ones will be tied on gifts. I hadn't messed with glass in quite a while and my hands are sore! If I worked on glass constantly they would toughen up... trying to knit with these rough hands is quite a challange! Its all good tho... and I think the ornaments turned out well.

She posted each step day by day... a lot of fun to try to figure out what this little knitted toy was going to be... until it got to the feathers! I think it turned out pretty well considering I am still all thumbs when it comes to DBNs... try to check out her blog. She also has written three books of which I own two. I do admire her skills.

I went to see this movie because my sister Terri bugged me into it. I had truly forgotten how talented this man was! This film showcases his talents and it was thrilling to watch. When he got to Billie Jean I wanted to jump up! One of my favorite songs of his. If you love music you must see this.

Soupy Sales had passed away

January 8, 1926 - October 22,2009

I just discovered that Soupy Sales passed away at the age of 83.

Soupy Sales was a regular visitor to my house when I was a teenager. My sisters and I watched his show all the time and I can remember some of the stunts he pulled that later became legend. I loved White Fang, which was basically just a big white furry paw - you never saw the rest of White Fang - who threw pies at Soupy. Black Tooth was the same only black and female and she gave Soupy big wet kisses.

His most famous stunt was the time he told the kids in his audience to sneak into their parents bedroom, rummage through their wallets or pants, take out a dollar (which he described as, “funny green pieces of paper with pictures of U.S. Presidents”) and mail it to him. He then told the kids that they would get a postcard from him from Puerto Rico for it. The dollars started rolling in, Soupy tried to explain to the angry parents complaining that it was a joke and the money would be donated to charity, but he was suspended from the show for two weeks. When kids started picketing the TV station it just proved how popular Soupy’s show was.

Do you remember the “topless dancer behind the door” stunt his crew pulled on him? Remember he would open a door on the set to reveal a celebrity guest or just an arm he would joke with? Well, to Soupy’s surprise, his crew once positioned a topless dancer behind the door during the live broadcast (out of range of the show camera but covered with a few strategic balloons). He gave his great Soupy laugh and smile... his smile was always a little bit naughty.

I didn’t find out he had a Twitter account until I read the news of his death - I certainly would have followed him. One of his last tweets was, “Did you kids catch me at the Oscar ceremony last Sunday? Neither did security! KAPOW!” Typical Soupy humor.

Goodbye Soupy, thanks for all the laughs.

When watching this movie, you will need extraordinary patience. Its slow-going... and the video camera's jerky movements can really play havoc with your eyeballs... but its definately a good old-fashioned horror movie... and one of the things that made this so good was how slowly the movie developed... and what a jolt the ending is! I loved this film.

I was engrossed in knitting the most beautiful scarf out of some very wonderful Spud and Chloe yarn today... and realized that I had no potatos in the house to add to the stew I am cooking. I rarely do this but I asked my husband if he would go pick up a few potatos for me... I hated to stop my knitting. He was sweet and said sure... and this is what he brought back! Note to self: never send husband to pick up anything again! I should know after 14 years of marriage that this would happen! Maybe I'll plant some of them outside and see if I can get a potato crop next summer!

I just finished this cute advent elf doll. Its going to my neice and nephew. It has 25 pockets which I'll put little things in... hershey kisses, little cars etc. Every day the will get to ull a gift ot of that days' pocket. This took quite a while to do... and I'm relieved that its finished! Cute.. isn't it!

Great movie. Filmed in 1971. Steven Spielbergs first directorial attempt. Tense... thrilling. I was on the edge of my seat throughout most of the movie. It can be found on Netflix... I don't know about Blockbuster. Don't let the fact that its over 30 years old keep you from this film... its worth seeing. Four stars.

I was very happy to see Bryan Cranston pick up the Emmy for the best actor in a dramatic series (Breaking Bad). He deserved it... and was disappointed that Aaron Paul didn't get his for best supporting actor. This is one of the best series on television... gritty, dramatic, humorous.. and addictive. If you have never seen it try to... season 3 is due to start (I think) in January.

Georgia O'Keefe

I just finished watching Lifetime's movie about the wonderful artist Georgia O'Keefe. My opinion of the movie is that overall it was a typical Hollywood flick... too much emphasis on her relationship with Steiglitz... too much heart-broken crying over her painful marriage. I had wanted to see much more emphasis on her life in New Mexico and her relationship with her natural surroundings and how it was reflected in her art. The only positive thing was it re-awakened my love of her work. I'm not sure if any of you have ever been in Northern New Mexico but it is as beautiful as it was depicted in the movie. Just be aware that Georgia O'Keefe was a much stronger woman then the film showed.

The ending of summer and the beginning of a new project!

Here are a few of the last of my summer flowers. My husband picked them for me. Sad to see everything starting to die back. Santa Fe has had a week of very cold nights. But... I must add... that Fall is my favorite season. I love everything about it... the holidays... the pinon smoke in the air... life seems to slow down a bit. I am also starting this adorable baby sweater. The pattern is Tulip by DreamsinColorYarn.com. The yarn is by KnitPicks... Palette. Its a fingerling weight yarn and this will make this a very light and airy little sweater. So far I am still struggling to knit. There are usually some sort of error... which I am able to disguise in the finished project. Some day... some day... I'll actually knit a project without errors! I'm trying.

I should re-name this blog as the Crazed Knitter! I have been knitting non-stop for two weeks now. I love knitting and am learning different stitches with each project. These are six little baby washcloths for my neice Lisa Beth. She just had her baby last night... a little girl. I also have finished a very pretty little baby sweater for her. I'm blocking it now and will post a photo of it as soon as its dry. I'm now starting on another baby sweater. This project is a challange for me... full of new stitches. I am taking it slow. Movie Review: 500 Days of Summer

OH my... I love loved this movie. Its the first movie I've seen in a very long time that I enjoyed enough to actually come home and bore my husband talking about it. The acting was outstanding. I would encourage everyone who reads my blog to go out and see this film. There is a wonderful scene where the lead character has fallen in love... and while he is walking to work he starts dancing and the people around him all start dancing... there is even a disney bluebird flying around! Cleverly written... and a heartwarming movie. SEE IT!!!

Here is my feeble attempt at painting! I wanted a red door. Badly. For months now. So finally pushed up my shirt sleeves and tackled it. I am hoping that after three coats it looks better than it look now! I have to wait 24 hours before applying the second coat. Which means I'll be looking at this mess all day LONG! I can only pray that it look nice in three days. If not I'll have to lower my pride and beg my husband to do something with it. Hopefully not tho... I wanted this to be my project! Wish me luck!

Movie Review: Inglorious Basterds

I saw this film and it is SO Quentin Taratino! Its split up into chapters. Bold headlines describing characters. A lot of violence. And pure fantasy. I enjoyed this film because it is unique... as are all Tarantino films. Brad Pitt is wonderfully humorous and I laughed out loud several times. This is a great ride of a film. Try not to miss it.

I am thinking of having our local kid's dentist give these to his little patients... just put the tooth in the bag, then the parent takes out the tooth and replaces it with cash! Movie Review: Funny People

Gangly, long, somewhat disjointed, but still very funny, I found “Funny People” surprisingly emotional, and even poignant.

Adam Sandler is just barely old-enough to play a well-known successful comedian (George Simmons), adored, and loved by all except himself. A serious disease interrupts his indulgent empty life causing him to reconsider a great many things. Into that moment walks Ira (Seth Rogen) as the new waiter, go-for, bedtime story reader, and joke writer.

You can expect a lot of verbal obscenities. As Adam Sandlers’s character says (and I paraphrase), “If I cut out all the fart and private part jokes, I’d lose half my set.”

Despite its many many filthy jokes (which made me very nervous), the film is a sweet movie about friendship and committment.

Eric Bana was fun to see... and made me laugh more than once with his sincere fixed-eye stare. And this is the first time I have been actually impressed with Seth Rogen... his character was sweet and very moral... which was refreshing to see.

I give this movie 3 stars.. I would have enjoyed it much more if they had cleaned up at least 75 percent of the f-words and lightened up on the dirty jokes.

Today I finished another project that I have been working on for a few weeks not. Its a knitted jacket for my new great-nephew. I knitted it out of a organic cotton yarn and I love the way it feels. This project is not perfect... I am still struggling with knitting and really messed up the knit increase stitches... but oh well... its still cute and I only hope she likes it. She lives on the coast of Northern California so it gets damp there in the evenings.. and this may be nice for this baby to stay snuggly warm. I also got the urge to bake coconut bread and it turned out delicous! I am going to start with the TOPS program next week... so I'll not be able to bake goodies very often. :( I LOVE TO BAKE. "The Great" Buck Howard (John Malkovich) has spent most of his life in the limelight. His mind-boggling feats as a mentalist extraordinaire – not to be confused with those of a mere magician - earned him 61 appearances on Johnny Carson’s "Tonight Show." In his own humble opinion, his talents go far beyond simple sleight of hand – he can read minds and hypnotize not just a single soul but an entire room of people! But nowadays, it’s clear to everyone but Buck that his act has lost its luster; he performs in faded community centers and hasn’t sold out a theater in years.
Yet, with a hearty handshake (which was hysterically funny to watch over and over again) and a trademark “I love this town!” Buck Howard continues to be confident in himself, convinced that a comeback is right around the corner. He needs a new road manager and personal assistant. As it turns out, a recent law school drop-out, would-be writer Troy Gable (Colin Hanks), needs a job. I loved this movie a lot... and recommend it. I think the title of this film sucks... and was a real turn-off at the box office. But Malkovich is awesome in this and deserves credit. Trust me... rent this and you won't be sorry! FOUR STARS.

Vacationing in Steamboat Springs

This past week I spent a wonderful time in Steamboat Colorado with my VBF Diane and her wonderful sister Charlotte. We walked the Yampa River, ate out at some tasty restaurants, stayed in a comfortable condo, saw "The Hangover" (not recommended), saw their beautiful botanic gardens, and just had a relaxed time. We took some real artsy photos.. one of our shadows reflected in the Yampa River. We have decided to make this a "Same Time Next Year" thing and do it all over again in a year. Fun times!

Throughout their young lives, the sisters endure various medical procedures and hospital stays--just another part of their close-knit family's otherwise normal life. Sara, a loving wife and mother who left her career as an attorney to care for her daughter, is sometimes lost inside the single-minded caregiver she has become in her efforts to save Kate. Her strong, supportive husband, Brian, is often rendered powerless and passive by his wife's strength and determination. And their only son, Jesse, drifts, at times all but forgotten as Kate and Anna take center stage. Until Anna, now 11, says "no." Seeking medical emancipation, she hires her own lawyer initiating a court case that divides the family and that could leave Kate's rapidly failing body in the hands of fate. The ending of this film disappointed me. I had read the book last year and the changed ending was a surprise to me. I wish they had delved deeper into their brother, Jesse's problems. I wish they had the courage to end the movie as the book ended. The acting in this film was wonderful and I was really impressed (for the first time) by Cameron Diaz's performance. I recommend this film for its subject matter which could lead to some heavy discussions. I give it 3 stars.

Movie Review: Away We Go

The couple here are young and naive with a baby on the way who for the first time find themselves wondering about where they fit in the world and what they'll be like as parents. They're hopeful, but you can see the fear plastered on their face. John Krasinski (The Office) and Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live) play Burt and Verona, a mid-thirties boyfriend-girlfriend (Verona has a marriage issue) who get the shock of their lives when Verona gets pregnant. Not only that but any connection they have in their little Connecticut town are about to be uprooted because Burt's parents (a funny Jeff Daniels and Catherine O'Hara) are moving to Belgium a month before the baby is born. Having no reason to stay where they are, they pack up and take a road trip, stopping anywhere they know they might find a familiar face. Phoenix, Tucson, Madison, Montreal, and Miami are all visited for a short time as they try and figure out who and what they would like to raise their family around.

There are a lot of real odd characters in this film. Allison Janney is the funniest of them playing Verona's former boss Lily, an abrasive alcoholic who enjoys point-blank degrading her children and her crazy, paranoid husband. Maggie Gyllenhaal also shows up later on as Burt's zen-like cousin who takes family closeness to a whole new creepy level.

This isn't a perfect film... and it has a few unanswered questions... but I recommend it a a quiet and gentle movie and worth seeing by thinking people. I give it 4.5 stars.

I am genuinly sad about this guy's passing. For the past few weeks my husband and I have had fun watching his show "Pitchmen" and its hard to believe he's gone. It was far more believable that Michael Jackson's life ended... I never could see him growing old. But this guy! He was fun to watch... super high energy and it made you want to buy anything that he was pitching. He will be missed by a lot of people including myself.

California dreaming...

I just got back from spending 16 days in Southern California... amongst the surfers, hang gliders... and two blocks from the Pacific Ocean. It was nice... and primarily I went there to spend some quality time with my mother who was recently widowed. We saw movies, ate at great restaurants, visited friends, and in general had a restful time. One of the movies I watched was UP by Disney/Pixar. It was a great little film... I even watched it in 3D... my favorite characters was Dug the dog and that cute chubby little boy... Anyone who has kids should see this with them... adults will love it too. One of the reasons I love Pixar films is that they aren't just flat cartoons with repeating backgrounds and characters with no personality... but actual characters that have individual personalities... and the animations are so great that you forget your watching what is basically a cartoon... with the added bonus that parents and kids together enjoy them. So I'm really glad to be back home. Hope your summer is as nice as mine has started out to be!

Finished crochet scarf

It took two weeks but its completed. I love how it turned out... the little bells on the ends match the varigated colors in the yarn. This was crocheted with Red Heart yarn, color is Wildflower. It was inexpensive to do and I think it looks great. I am considering selling it in a little shop downtown in the Plaza. A lot of folks from back East vacation here during the summer and maybe the perfect person will look at this and visualize how warm and cozy it will be during a snowstorm!

My best friend Diane drove down from Denver, my sister Lindsey and her hubby Spencer drove down from Colorado Springs, and my mother, my sister Terri and my brother Chris flew in from California. It was the best time I believe I have EVER had! One of these photos shows both sisters, myself, and Diane in matching blouses but in rainbow colors... one photo is of myself with my mother, and one is of myself with my brother. Whew! It was a blast!

Retirement

Well... this is already my third week in retirement. It still feels strange not to be heading out the door at 7:45 am for a work day. I've been enjoying this time... cleaning my house... walking my dogs every day and not just on the weekends... and taking afternoon naps! What luxury! At my retirement party I was awarded my retirement bearhead plaque thats given to all Game and Fish people when they retire. For me it symbolizes a lot of effort, and just hanging in there thru a lot of tough times. I will be posting photos of my party soon. Please forgive the glare on the plaque... I still haven't completely figured out my camera!

Movie review: Doubt

This movie clipped along for me. It was adapted from a play therefore there is not a lot of action... but the dialogue more than makes up for that. This is a movie for thinking adults. If you are willing to invest a few hours in it, you will reap a huge return. If you are only looking for a light-hearted hour of entertainment, you might want to avoid this one. But, then, you will have missed the Best Picture, the Best Actress, the Best Actor, and the Best Supporting Actresses of 2008. Another thing... you will miss the fun of trying to guess if the priest is guilty or not. This is a 4-star movie.

Crocheting and a movie review

This has been a wonderful first week of retirement. I've finished many household jobs that I have had to put off for ages now. Its so nice to know that I have all the time in the world to keep up my house.

Heres a photo of my scarf project I just started. I have so many UFOs but this one I plan on finishing by end of this month. It will have tiny little bells sewn on to each end. Perhaps a nice Christmas gift for someone? I'll post a photo of it when its finished.

I also just saw "The Soloist". I have mixed feelings about this one. The acting was wonderful... give Jamie Fox a oscar nomination... and the story was interesting... and sad to see the homeless people in the film... I'm pretty sure most of the extras were actually homeless folks. But for some odd reason this movie just didn't grip my soul. Don't know why. The theme of the movie is one I would usually just live with for days. But it is worth seeing and I give it 3.5 stars.

First day as a Retiree!

My father

When I was four my father was killed in Korea. Two years later my mother re-married. He adopted me, and my two sisters and became a father for us. They then had three more children of their own. My step-father never treated any of us differently and loved all six of us equally. He was such a strong father that it feels strange even referring to him as a step-father. He retired in 1974 from the FBI... he was an agent for 26 years. He passed on yesterday. A regret I have is that I was not able to be closer to him in the past 20 years. I live 1,000 miles away. I'll never forget his goodness and his spirit. Bye daddy... I love you.

Movie Review: Wendy and Lucy

This is a very slow and a very simple story but beautiful told and acted. A young woman named Wendy (the amazing Michelle Williams) and her dog Lucy hop in her beat-up Honda and leave Indiana for Alaska, Wendy's hope for a new life. But when her car dies in Oregon and Lucy goes missing, Wendy faces hard choices and a tired and financially stressed America that keeps closing doors. I won't say more, except that director and co-writer Kelly Reichardt (Old Joy) is a true cinema poet who works miracles in miniature. And she finds the perfect collaborator in Williams, an actress of grit and amazing grace. I give the film five stars.

Movie Review: Australia

This movie takes place in Australia, right before World War II. An English aristocrat travels to there where she meets a rowdy hard drinking man and reluctantly agrees to travel with him in order to save the land she inherited. Together, they endure a journey across hundreds of miles of the outback, only to still face the bombing of the city of Darwin by the Japanese forces that attacked Pearl Harbor. There is a lot more to this movie than what I have said. This was a loooooong movie... endless... and just when you thought it was over it started up again. There are several parts of it I did like... especially the little boy... I could not take my eyes off him.. he was magical to watch. Thumbs down on Nicole Kidman... she did nothing for me in this film... I felt she had no chemistry with Hugh Jackman. But the scenery and photography were outstanding and made the movie worth watching. I give it 3 stars... and just wish Hollywood would stop placing actors in roles that they are unsuited for! Oh... by the way... check out the scene toward the beginning when Hugh Jackman pours water down his chest. Hmmmm... yes. Definately one of the worlds sexiest male actors.

Movie Review: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

I've been on quite a movie run... thanks to Netflix!

This was a tense, disturbing and depressing movie. The acting was by far the best I have seen this past year (where was this movie when nominations for the acadamy were given?) I love both of the child actors... in particular the young jewish boy. It broke my heart to see this young and innocent face so terrified every minute. I won't go into any detail about this film as the story is too rich and disturbing to discuss. Its well worth seeing but be prepared to come away thinking about it for days afterwards.

Movie Review: House of D

There is a flashback to Greenwich Village in 1973, as thirteen-year-old Tommy (Anton Yelchin) is on the brink of becoming a man. While his grieving single mother (Tea Leoni) mourns the death of his father, Tommy escapes grief by causing trouble at school and making afternoon deliveries with his best friend Pappas (Robin Williams), a mentally challenged janitor. Following the romantic advice offered by Lady (Erykah Badu) - incarcerated in the infamous New York Women's House of Detention for shadowy reasons - Tommy experiences his first taste of love. Yet when an unexpected tragedy radically alters his world, Tommy must take a life-defining choice - one that will compel the adult Tom Warshaw, thirty years later, to confront his unfinished past. I loved most of this movie but felt that the ending fell flat. Its hard to watch Robin Williams and believe he is anyone other than Robin Williams... his real character shines thru every film character he plays. This could have been a better film if someone other than Mr. Williams played the part of Pappas. Anton Yelchin is a remarkable young actor and you felt this kids pain. I give it 3 stars.

Movie Review: Strange Planet

This 1999 film is a comedy and takes place over the course of one year - opening on New Year's Eve of one year and closing exactly one year later. The film focuses on three women living together in a house in Sydney and three male best friends. The men and women at the film's start have not yet met, but it is obvious that all will get together by film's end. The three women are all ending nowhere relationships with married men, older men, or just life's losers. One of the men is just a shy law graduate, one is a sexual conqueror who has just learned one of his conquests is pregnant, and the last is facing a breakup of his marriage. Through various events, each of the two trios end up together at the turn of the year. I think this may be one of Naomi Watts first films... I am a huge fan of hers and it was fun seeing her outshine all of the others in this film. It was also filmed in Sydney Australia. I lived for a short while on the east coast of Australia... a small town outside of Brisbane... so I am always thrilled to see any Australian film. They do make wonderful movies there. I give this 3 stars as some of the characters were silly and the plot was fairly transparent. But I still enjoyed watching this movie.

I loved this movie... and it had me wondering what was real and what wasn't. To secure a green card for Jeff Goldblum's Canadian fiance he's agreed to do a 2-week regional theater production of The Music Man in his Pennsylvania hometown. Now he's faced with grueling rehearsals, a furious agent, good friends (Ed Begley Jr. and Illeana Douglas) with their own troubles whom he's convinced to costar, and the very real prospect of a song-and-dance disaster. Moby, Conan O'Brien, Alanis Morissette, Craig Kilborn, Tom Cavanaugh, and Skip E. Lowe appear in this real-life 'mockumentary' about one Hollywood superstar's public fame and private life colliding head-on in Pittsburgh. Art and life continuously roll back and forth in this comedy that documents Goldblum's real experience with musical theater and his ability to poke fun at life in the limelight. I give this 4 stars and recommend it for just a pure fun viewing.
